When the Second World War ended, Daimler-Benz AG was experiencing some difficulties. In 1951, a high-level modernization of the 170 became the 220 series. The styling was similar to the previous 170, but its headlights were recessed into the wings, giving the car a more modern appearance. The all-new engine made this model the mainstay of the Mercedes-Benz line-up, remaining in production well into the 1970s.
